| Further Information: "Pleurotus pulmonarius (Fr.) Quel. was first recorded in the Maltes islands by Mr. David Dandria at Wied tal-Isqof (l/o Rabat) on 23rd March 2002. The fungus was growing on a mulberry tree which was dying from a massive attack by the Mulberry wood-borer Phryneta leprosa. It was included in Michael Briffa's paper ""Some additions to the macrofungi of Malta"" while the wood-borer was recorded in the paper by myself and David Mifsud ""Intoduction and establishment of Phryneta leprosa (Fabricius (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) in Malta"" both published in The Central Mediterranean Naturalist Vol. 4 No. 3 (2002). Pleurotus pulmonaius is very similar to Pleurotus ostreatus, (the pearl oyster), but the former is much paler and smaller than P. ostreatus and develops more of a stem. P. pulmonarius also prefers warmer weather than P. ostreatus and will appear later in the Summer. Spores white to yellowish or lavender-gray when dense, more or less cylindrical, 7-11 x 3-4 micrometers in size." |
